Book donations

E-mail Print PDF
As it seems ESES will have a quite big group of students starting in two weeks. Since always we don’t know exactly how many finally will come, but considering the increased application numbers we would be very surprised if not at least 30 students would start. We have a couple of Duffie and Beckman (in total 8) donated by Alumni which we borrow to the students who can’t afford to buy their own. We would need some more books also because some of the books are already in a bad shape and are from the 2nd edition (3rd edition is the latest). So it would be great to get some more books for our students and maybe some one of our Alumni wants to donate his own book or buy one for the students. The easiest way would be to order it via http://www.bokus.com/b/9780471698678.html?pt=search_result&search_term=duffie where also the price is quite low. You need to use SERC as the delivery address. The webpage is unfortunately only in Swedish so let me know if you need help.

We will write a dedication on the first page of the book so that the students know who has sponsored the book.

500 kW PV Project in North-West China

E-mail Print PDF

Zhang Feng, ESES graduate from 2005/2006, has been working with Conergy China on the design and start-up for a 87kW 2-axis tracking PV plant located in a national park near Wuwei in the north-west of China. The total system size is 500kW, which includes also 300kW fixed mounted and 100kW on single axis trackers (planned). The 87kW are connected to a single 100kW inverter. The movement of the trackers is controlled by a model of the sun path. No sensors are used. On each tracker 32 pcs 170W monocrystalline-Si PV modules are mounted. AC output is 400V/50Hz. The calculated annual output is 183MWh. The energy is via a transformer (10kV) fed into public grid.
The Chinese authorities are currently working on a regulation to support PV through a feed-in tariff. Maybe a big break-through for PV in China?!

Elieser Tarigan visited SERC/ESES

E-mail Print PDF
Dr. Elieser Tarigan, a graduate of ESES from 2002/2003, has visited SERC in October 2008. After graduating from ESES Elieser studied for a PhD in the area of solar drying at the King Mungkuts University of Technology Thonbury, Thailand. After finishing his PhD he returned to teach physics at the University of Surabaya.

Currently the University of Surabaya is expanding its 3rd campus in Trawas, a rural area of the East Java Province. At this campus it is planed to establish a research center in the field of renewable energy and it is also projected to offer courses in solar energy. The aim of the visit was to discuss possibilities of collaboration between SERC/ESES and his University in the area of renewable energy. The visit is funded by at grant of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) within the Linnaeus-Palme program.
Elieser was giving a guest lecture on solar drying for the ESES students and the SERC staff and visited among others the PV system on the roof of the rescue station and the biomass cogeneration plant in Falun. In November Frank Fiedler from SERC will carry out a return visit in Indonesia.

New ESES Alumni Website

E-mail Print PDF
After maintaining two separate websites between ESES.org and the ESES Alumni organization we have finally combined the two websites. The alumni page is now a part of the ESES.org site. Please check back here for news about the ESES Alumni organization. There is still much work to be done to add members lists and other information from the old webpage, but you can expect this to happen in the next few weeks.
